Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known for a woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and the iconic Great Wave Off Kanagawa. He did not begin this series until the age of 70. Perhaps the idea of immortality associated with Mount Fuji in Japanese culture contributed to his obsession with the subject. In his most celebrated print, Mount Fuji is small in the distance as a wave curls over ocean-tossed boats. After his death, Hokusai’s prints influenced artists such as Monet, Degas, and van Gogh.
